What is EQAO testing?

Late in grade 3 and grade 6, all students in Ontario are required to take a province wide assessment administered by Equality Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). EQAO is a standardized test conducted to evaluate students’ understanding and application of key concepts in math and literacy. This assessment enables the schools and district school boards to make informed decisions for your child’s education. Excelling in EQAO math and language assessment requires a combination of preparation, strategy, and confidence. For this reason, we are sharing some valuable tips and EQAO practice tests to help your child prepare for  the EQAO tests with confidence.

Tips to Answer Multiple-choice Questions in EQAO Test

1) Highlight the Key Words</p

First, read the question carefully and highlight the key words. This strategy teaches you how to find out important information in the reading comprehension. Underlining these key words and phrases helps you focus on the best answer.

2) Try to Answer the Question First Before Looking at the Options</p

After highlighting the keywords, try to answer the questions before going through the options. Answering a question with a lot of options can be confusing. Reading options while answering the questions may lead you to the wrong answers. Due to this reason, reading the questions and answering before reading options is really helpful. After you read the question, try to come up with the answer yourself without referring to the options given.

3) Eliminate Wrong Answers</p

While going through the options, eliminate all the possible wrong answers. This will lead you to your right answer. Sometimes you may have two or more choices left. In this case, read the question again, reread your choices, understand their differences and try to eliminate the wrong answer.

Strategies to Answer Open-response Questions in EQAO Test

I enjoy using this as an introductory exercise for my students who struggle to answer open-ended questions in complete sentences. The A.P.E. Strategy is perfect for students who are learning to write better answers in their reading comprehension tasks. It is also an effective strategy to prepare for EQAO exam.

A.P.E. Strategy

1. Answer it

First, read the question carefully and underline the key words. Then, answer the question using part of your question in your answer. Remember what you’ve read. DON’T GUESS!

2. Prove it

After stating it, support your answer by using specific details and relevant information from the reading.

3. Explain it

At last, extend your answer by providing details on why the particular evidence was helpful to answer your questions. Don’t forget to read your final response. Ask yourself, “Does it answer the question?”
