How to Develop Strong Test-Taking Skills for Academic Success

Test Taking Skills

Success on a test depends on more than knowing the material. As educators, we often see students who understand concepts well but underperform in tests because they rush through questions, misinterpret instructions, or lack effective test-taking strategies.

Strong test-taking skills are learned behaviours that help students approach assessments with confidence, think critically under pressure, and demonstrate what they truly know. Whether preparing for classroom assessments, EQAO, or high school exams, these strategies can significantly improve both performance and confidence.

1. Reread Each Question Three Times

Encourage your child to slow down and reread each question at least three times. It may seem unnecessary, but many mistakes happen simply because students misread what the question is asking. Looking for keywords like not, best, or explain can help them avoid careless errors.

2. Use Prior Knowledge

When students feel stuck, they often think they don’t know the answer. Remind them to pause and connect the question to something they’ve already learned in class. Activating prior knowledge helps them recall important information and solve problems with more confidence.

3. Eliminate Wrong Answers First

Multiple-choice questions become much easier when students cross out answers they know are incorrect. Instead of guessing from four choices, they may only need to choose between two. It’s a simple strategy that improves accuracy and confidence.

4. Plug In Answers to See if They Make Sense

Effective test-takers don’t simply solve a problem—they verify their solution. In maths, plugging an answer back into the question or estimating whether the answer is reasonable helps identify calculation errors before moving on.

5. Represent Thinking with Models and Equations

Drawing diagrams, creating visual models, using number lines, or writing equations helps students organize their thinking and solve problems more accurately. These representations are particularly valuable in mathematical problem-solving and are encouraged throughout the Ontario curriculum and EQAO assessments.

6. If One Strategy Doesn't Work, Try Another

If one approach isn’t working, students should be prepared to use another. Working backwards, drawing a diagram, creating a table, estimating, or breaking a complex problem into smaller steps are all effective problem-solving strategies that demonstrate flexible thinking.

7. Explain Your Reasoning

Many students believe only the final answer matters, but that’s not the case in Ontario classrooms. The Ontario Mathematics curriculum places a strong emphasis on reasoning and communication, encouraging students to explain their thinking, justify their strategies, and use mathematical language to support their solutions. This is especially important on EQAO assessments and classroom evaluations, where students can earn marks for their reasoning, even if they don’t arrive at the correct final answer.

8. Manage Test Anxiety

Feeling nervous before a test is normal. Students who practise simple self-regulation strategies such as deep breathing, positive self-talk, and focusing on one question at a time are better able to maintain concentration and make thoughtful decisions throughout an assessment.

9. Never Give Up

If a question seems difficult, move on and return to it later if needed. Stay positive, keep trying, and believe in your ability to succeed.

Why Test-Taking Skills Matter

Strong test-taking skills help students:

  • Build confidence during assessments.
  • Improve problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Reduce test anxiety.
  • Make fewer careless mistakes.
  • Achieve better results on classroom tests, EQAO, and high school exams.

Like any skill, test-taking strategies improve with practice. When students consistently apply these techniques, they become more confident learners and perform better across all subjects.
